GRADE 3 STUDENTS EXPLORE PERMACULTURE 08.01.2026

As 3rd grade students, we explored the concept of permaculture in line with our central idea: how ecological and social systems shape the relationship between humans and nature. Within this central idea, we were excited to host teacher Özge Yılmaz, who works in the field of permaculture. We learnt together that permaculture is not only a farming method but also a way of thinking and living that aims to design sustainable human settlements. During the presentation, we examined the differences between monoculture and permaculture and discovered through examples how well-designed relationships between elements create balance, diversity, and efficiency within systems. We also focused on the three core principles of permaculture: “Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share” — and drew attention to environmental challenges we face today, such as soil degradation, deforestation, and pollution. Through practices like element analysis and mulching, we had the opportunity to question the impact of human-nature interactions on systems and realised that permaculture can create big changes through small but effective actions. Through this learning experience, we developed our ecological awareness as inquirers, thinkers, and caring individuals.
