“THREE SAVINGS BOXES”: BUILDING FINANCIAL LITERACY WITH GRADE 4 STUDENTS 06.01.2026

With our Grade 4 students, we carried out a variety of activities within the scope of our “How We Organize Ourselves” unit, guided by the central idea: “People trade and establish economic systems to meet their needs and maintain a sustainable order.” Throughout this process, our students learned to distinguish between wants and needs, prioritize them, and relate these concepts to daily life. While exploring the ideas of income and expenses, they developed awareness of saving, spending, and sharing through the “Three Savings Boxes” activity, designed to encourage the conscious use of their allowances. By creating their own budgets, students discovered the importance of maintaining a balance between income and expenses through hands-on experience. Throughout the unit, we further deepened and enriched their learning by supporting our classroom activities with insights shared by our guest expert, Zeynep Yaz.
