FARMING IN THE ELC GARDEN: WE GREW LETTUCE FROM HEIRLOOM SEEDS 14.05.2026

At Işıkkent, learning continues to be enriched through strong connections established across different age groups. As part of the Heirloom Seed Project, carried out within the theme “How the World Works,” our ELC3 students planted heirloom lettuce seeds in our garden together with our high school students. Throughout the process, our students regularly observed the growth of the lettuces, took responsibility for their care by watering them, and measured their development using their hands and rulers. By noticing the changes over time, they followed the journey from seed to plant step by step. While exploring the conditions plants need to grow, such as water, soil, and sunlight, they developed awareness of the life cycle of living things. Our students also prepared signs to protect the planting area and inform the school community. Guided by our high school students, the Seed Heritage Project contributed to shared learning between different age groups, nature-based experiential learning, and the development of a sense of responsibility.
